ABSTRACT PORTFOLIOS
I started exploring abstract photography as opposed to representational photography nearly 20 years ago and it is a journey I am still enjoying. The notion that an object in a photograph might not necessarily be the main subject is a key tenet for much of my work. For me, making an abstract photograph is about making the objects in the frame dance to the tune of a higher purpose whether that is an idea, a narrative or a metaphor.
Dynamic Balance
Of the many aspects to photography, the art of composition has most intrigued me over the years.
In the best pictures, the viewer’s eye seems to be held in the image in an almost hypnotic way, dancing around the picture. This characteristic is what I came to call ‘dynamic balance’ and it has become a key goal of my photographic approach. But how is this achieved?
This article examines ideas for how to construct or ‘compose’ dynamic balance in pictures.
Portfolio Thinking
It took some time in my photographic journey to transition from single images to portfolios or groups of images. It was only when I started to think about writing a book about five years into the journey that I started to work groups of images. What did I learn from this transition?
This article examines ideas for how to incorporate portfolio thinking into your work.
